Connie-Gail Feller, born May 30, 1941, and passed-away on Yom Kippur, Sept. 25, 2023. She was one of 3 children of Betty and Joe Feller, owner of legendary Feller’s Men’s Wear on Rideau Street. She was an Art student at University of Ottawa, and later attended Boston University, winning her first beauty pageant contest as University of Ottawa Carnival Queen, and later Miss Boston University Homecoming Queen.

A natural for entertaining people, she was encouraged by her parents to compete for Miss

Ottawa, a competition held outside the then brand new Westgate Mall with Peter Jennings as master of ceremonies.

Her talent routine included singing, flamenco dancing and flamenco guitar. When reporters asked why she chose guitar, she responded she “couldn’t schlep a piano to the shopping mall.” Her talent could easily have been stand-up comedy. She won the Miss Ottawa title on August 11, 1961.

Winning Miss Ottawa automatically enrolled Connie-Gail as a contestant for the Miss Canada competition, which she won August 15, 1961 in Burlington, Ontario, becoming the first Ottawan to become Miss Canada.
