Ottawa’s urban forest just grew stronger. On October 24, Mayor Mark Sutcliffe joined Councillor Marty Carr and
The announcement, marked by a ceremonial tree planting, also saw Mayor Sutcliffe proclaim October 24 as Tree Canopy Day—a recognition of the vital role trees play in climate action and community well-being.

As part of the sponsorship, the City and CFTC launched “Let’s Get Growing!”, a new campaign designed to rally local businesses, leaders, and residents around a shared goal: protecting and expanding Ottawa’s tree canopy for future generations. Funds raised through the initiative will directly support the City’s tree-planting programs and urban forestry operations.
CFTC, an Ottawa-based social enterprise, offers turnkey, nature-based climate solutions through its innovative Smart Forest™ technology. These digital tools not only help track and measure environmental impact but also connect businesses and communities to tangible climate results. Through corporate stewardship, employee engagement programs, and customer donation options at checkout, businesses can actively contribute to reforestation and see their impact through real-time digital dashboards.
Mayor Sutcliffe praised the partnership as a practical and forward-thinking approach to climate action. “Every tree we plant is an investment in Ottawa’s future,” he said. “This collaboration brings together residents, businesses, and local government around a shared goal—protecting our environment for generations to come.”
Gary Zed echoed this sentiment, calling the initiative “bold, visionary, and measurable.” He emphasized that lasting climate impact requires both individual and collective commitment: “Now we’re calling on all businesses to join us so that we can achieve the greatest impact today and for generations to come.”
Ottawa is now the first municipality in Canada to partner with CFTC, underscoring its leadership in climate innovation. Expanding the tree canopy supports the City’s broader environmental goals—improving air and water quality, mitigating floods, capturing carbon, cooling urban areas, and providing vital habitat for wildlife.
With this new partnership, CFTC joins the City’s Community Champions Program, which highlights organizations that strengthen municipal programs through sponsorship and community investment.
