Mayor Mark Sutcliffe will host the 23rd Annual Christmas Celebration at Ottawa City Hall on Saturday, December 6, an event that supports the Ottawa Food Bank and marks the unofficial start of the city’s festive season.
The celebration will run from 3 to 6 p.m. at 110 Laurier Avenue West. Admission is a donation to the Ottawa Food Bank.

This year’s program features a range of outdoor family activities. Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive from the North Pole and greet visitors from their own outdoor cabin. Attendees can roast marshmallows over a campfire and enjoy seasonal treats including hot chocolate, maple fudge, and taffy on snow. Horse-drawn wagon rides will also be available.
Food options include BeaverTails for $2, with all proceeds directed to the Ottawa Food Bank.
Weather permitting, the event will coincide with the seasonal opening of the Rink of Dreams, giving residents their first opportunity of the winter to skate at City Hall.
A highlight of the evening, the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, will take place at 4:45 p.m. on Marion Dewar Plaza.
City officials note that the event is made possible through support from corporate sponsors. In keeping with the event’s charitable focus, attendees are encouraged to bring donations for the Ottawa Food Bank.
Residents are advised that this is not a nut-free event, and are encouraged to dress warmly, as all activities are held outdoors. Parking at City Hall will be limited.
Full details are available on the City of Ottawa’s event webpage.
