Ottawa Build Heritage Committee is moving forward plans to preserve the unique character of Island Park Drive. At today's meeting (July 8, 2025), the Committee recommended that City Council accept the Island Park Drive Heritage Conservation District Feasibility Assessment—a key step in the process of designating the area as a Heritage Conservation District (HCD).

Based on the findings of the feasibility assessment, City Council will decide on July 23, 2025 whether to direct Heritage Planning staff to conduct a full Heritage Conservation District Study and prepare a detailed HCD Plan for Island Park Drive, as required by the Ontario Heritage Act. The study will examine the historical and cultural significance of the area and outline how best to protect its distinct streetscape and architectural character.
The Committee also received an updated version of the Terms of Reference for Heritage Conservation District Feasibility Assessments, which will guide future studies across the city.
Jenn Gillespie, past president of the Island Park Community Association deserves significant recognition for her dedicated efforts in gathering, researching, and publishing the comprehensive and rich history of Island Park Drive.
