Caring for the Canopy: Island Park Drive Tree Maintenance Begins

Tree trimming and maintenance along Island Park Drive began September 15, 2025, under the direction of the National Capital Commission. Contractors are inspecting, trimming, and fertilizing the boulevard’s mature trees to ensure the health and longevity of the historic canopy. Residents who notice a tree in need of attention near their homes are encouraged to contact us so we can share the information with the maintenance crews.

The trees lining Island Park Drive are much more than ornamental. Majestic elms, maples, and oaks create a living canopy that has defined the street’s character for generations, offering shade in summer, brilliant colour in autumn, and a timeless sense of place. These trees filter air pollutants, reduce noise, and provide habitat for birds and urban wildlife. Their roots help manage stormwater, while their leafy crowns reduce the urban heat effect, keeping the neighbourhood cooler. Protecting this canopy is an investment in community health, environmental resilience, and the enduring identity of Island Park Drive.
